etcd

Distributed, consistent key-value store that Kubernetes itself uses to store all cluster state, and a reliable building block for other distributed systems.

Overview

etcd stores data reliably across a cluster of machines using the Raft consensus algorithm, guaranteeing that all nodes agree on the current state even if some fail - the exact property Kubernetes relies on to store every object, config, and secret describing a cluster's desired state. It's a CNCF graduated project and one of the most battle-tested pieces of distributed systems infrastructure in production use.

etcd is a fit for teams building distributed systems that need strongly consistent coordination or configuration storage, whether that's running it themselves for a custom system or understanding it as the foundation underneath the Kubernetes entry already in this catalog.
