Overview
SeaweedFS is a distributed storage system designed around two goals: storing billions of files and serving them fast. A single `weed` binary can expose the same underlying data as an S3-compatible object store, a POSIX-compliant file system, and a lakehouse via S3 Tables, rather than requiring separate systems for each access pattern.
Each stored blob is reachable in roughly one disk read, and storage capacity scales by starting additional volume servers rather than resharding existing ones; cloud storage can also be layered in as a transparent cache or storage tier. This makes it a directly comparable option to other S3-compatible object storage systems for teams evaluating self-hosted storage - including as a live alternative for anyone currently relying on MinIO, whose community-edition GitHub repository has been archived and is no longer maintained.
SeaweedFS is a fit for teams that need self-hosted, S3-compatible object storage or a POSIX file system at large file counts, and want the option to scale storage capacity incrementally rather than through a single monolithic cluster.
