Temporal

Durable execution platform that lets developers write reliable, long-running workflows as ordinary code, with retries, state, and failure recovery handled automatically.

Overview

Temporal is a durable execution platform for building applications that need to reliably coordinate multi-step processes - order fulfillment, provisioning pipelines, approval flows, or any workflow that spans seconds, days, or months. Developers write Workflows as regular functions in Go, Java, Python, TypeScript, or .NET; the Temporal server records every step as event history and automatically retries failed activities, so a crash, deployment, or network blip doesn't lose progress or require hand-written retry logic.

Because workflow state lives in Temporal's event history rather than application memory or a database a team maintains itself, a workflow can safely run for months, survive worker restarts, and be inspected or replayed for debugging - originating as a fork of Uber's Cadence, it has matured into a widely adopted engine for this pattern.

Temporal is a fit for backend teams that keep reinventing retry logic, distributed locks, or cron-plus-database-flags to coordinate multi-step processes reliably, giving them a dedicated durable-execution runtime instead - a different tool than n8n (also in this catalog), which targets low-code, UI-first automation rather than code-first workflow engineering.
