Thanos
Extends Prometheus with long-term storage, global querying across clusters, and high availability for large-scale metrics deployments.
- Actively maintained
- Foundation-backed
- Well documented
- Permissive license
Overview
Thanos sits alongside existing Prometheus instances to add capabilities Prometheus doesn't provide alone: unlimited long-term metric retention in object storage, a single global query view across multiple Prometheus servers and clusters, and deduplication for high-availability Prometheus pairs. It's a CNCF graduated project designed to extend rather than replace Prometheus.
Thanos is a fit for teams already running Prometheus (also in this catalog) at multi-cluster scale who've hit its single-instance limitations, a complementary rather than competing addition to the existing monitoring stack.
Why it's in this catalog
